On 5th November, the English celebrate the revolution that never was (la révolution qui n’a jamais existé) by burning an effigy of the leader of the plot and setting off lots of fireworks.

Guy Fawkes’ Night, or Bonfire Night, is celebrated on 5th November, primarily in Great Britain.

Guy Fawkes was a conspirator in the “Gunpowder Plot” in 1605.

Catholic plotters were planning to assassinate the Protestant King James VI during the annual opening of parliament and replace him with a Catholic mornarch: they were going to blow up the Houses of Parliament during the annual Opening of Parliament whilst the King was there.

Often, we put an effigy of Guy Fawkes on the fire, and some years ago children would also make an effigy of Guy Fawkes and wheel him around the streets in a wheelbarrow to raise money.
